Highlights

  • Is this trip for me?This trip goes very local — tuk tuks, dusty roads, rural stays and Cambodia up close. You’ll travel with experienced tuk tuk drivers (one of whom will be our local guide), a Contiki Trip Manager and historical guides at key sites such as Angkor Wat. Expect simple homestays with fans, mosquito nets, shared facilities, no air con and no hot water. Some stays step up with private rooms, private facilities and air con. It’s not the polished private-vehicle version. It’s more real, more local, and made for travellers who are up for the adventure.
  • What are the luggage requirements? You're welcome to bring one suitcase with a max limit of 20kgs. Your main bag travels separately by van. We recommend bringing a small backpack to use as a daypack whilst on tuk tuks. Overnight bag needed for Kampong Khleang homestay.
  • What safety measures are in place on this trip?Your safety is our top priority. All drivers are fully licensed and complete comprehensive safety training. Your guides will also provide a detailed pre-tour safety briefing and are trained in safety management and first aid.
  • What's the transport like on this trip? You’ll travel by tuk tuk (or remorque, as they’re commonly known in Cambodia). Expect open-air rides, local roads and a proper street-level view of the country.
  • What are the homestays like on this trip?Simple, traditional and a great way to experience local life. In Kampong Khleang, you’ll stay in a stilted homestay above the water, sleeping in a large shared room with mattresses, mosquito nets and curtained-off spaces for privacy. There’s no hot water or air con, but the cold showers are usually welcome in the heat. Meals are served family-style, and there’s a large front deck with hammocks and village views where you can relax. In Sambor Prei Kuk, you'll stay across several neighbouring family-run homestays in the village. These stilted homes are built on land and have smaller room set-ups, with shared group meals hosted together at one homestay. Bathroom facilities vary by house, and hot water may or may not be available and there's no air con. So, expect a more rustic stay than a hotel — but one that’s warm, welcoming and full of character.
  • Will my choice of room type be accommodated throughout the trip?Yep, except on nights 3 and 4. Because these nights are in local homestays, single and twin room supplements don’t apply. Accommodation will be shared and set up in the local homestay style.
  • What should I pack for this trip?Pack light, loose clothing for the heat, plus comfy shoes for exploring temples and village paths. You’ll also want sun protection, mosquito repellent, a reusable water bottle, earplugs (to block out the early morning homestay buzz), and a scarf or mask for those dusty tuk tuk rides. A light layer or modest clothing for temple visits is a smart move too — shoulders and knees covered, easy win.

We’ll roll past rice fields to a local Khmer home for tonight’s dinner. Think BBQ eats, easy chats, and cracking open a cold one, and a front-row seat to rural sunset. Then we’ll head back to Siem Reap for the night, on your tuk-tuk. Of course.

After eating our packed breakfast, we'll jump back in the Tuk Tuk's and head to Ta Phrom to take in the peaceful jungle sights and sounds. You’ll have the rest of the day free back in Siem Reap — so, grab lunch at a local café or relax in the rooftop pool of your hostel.

Day 3Siem Reap to Kampong KhleangSiem Reap · Kampong Khleang

Imagine wooden houses rising high on stilts above the floodplains — that’s what you’ll see as we ride the tuk-tuks across back country roads from Siem Reap to Kampong Khleang this morning. Off the tuk-tuk and into village life. With a Local Guide, you'll explore Kampong Khleang, where towering stilt houses rise high above the floodplains and daily life revolves around the water. Along the way, you'll meet locals, learn about the community's deep connection to Tonlé Sap Lake, and get a closer look at the traditions that keep village life moving. In the afternoon, it's time for a boat ride across Tonlé Sap Lake, cruising past the floating village as the sun begins to set. Then it's back to our homestay for dinner and a relaxed evening by the water.

Up for a 4am wake-up call? Come visit the local fish market where the freshest catch of the day is already being bought, sold and whisked away before sunrise. After brekkie at the homestay, we’ll hop into our tuk-tuks and hit the road, covering around 80 km today — with more big-road cruising than yesterday’s off-road feel. First up: Kampong Kdei Bridge (Spean Praptos), one of the last surviving bridges from the Khmer Empire. Then it's on to Sambor Prei Kuk, where ancient pre-Angkorian temples sit among the trees and village life moves at its own pace. Later, we'll visit a noodle-making village to see how traditional Khmer noodles are made (and sample some too), with stops at local markets and, if time allows, a school or pagoda along the way. Back at the homestay, you can help prepare dinner before a relaxed evening around the bonfire, swapping stories with the locals and your travel crew.
