From Mainz to Frankfurt Seen by the Locals
This tour begins where most Frankfurt experiences don't: in Mainz. We travel together by train into Frankfurt — round-trip tickets included — before continuing on foot through the city's old town. Most people fly into Frankfurt, see the skyline from a taxi, and think they've seen the city. They haven't. I take you into the Frankfurt that doesn't show up in guidebooks — the Kaisersaal, where portraits of 52 Holy Roman Emperors still line the walls, and I'll tell you which ones actually mattered. We'll stand in the Kleinmarkthalle, Frankfurt's indoor market that's fed the city through two world wars, and taste something that's been part of daily life here for generations. Then we walk to the Iron Bridge, where medieval faith and modern finance stare at each other across the river, and I'll explain why that view says more about Frankfurt than any monument in the city. This is a walking tour at heart — comfortable shoes are a must — built around someone who knows why these places matter.
Your experience
Stop 1
Inside Frankfurt's Römer town hall, the Kaisersaal is one of those rooms that stops people mid-sentence. Portraits of all 52 Holy Roman Emperors crowned here line the walls, telling 500 years of European power, ambition, and the occasional spectacular failure. Your guide points out the ones worth knowing — and the stories the history books left out.
Stop 2
Roman Fortress (Kaiserpfalz) The imperial residence that placed Frankfurt at the center of European power for centuries. We pass it on the way to the market, with a short pause for context on why an emperor's palace ended up on this exact spot.
Stop 3
Kleinmarkthalle — 20 minutes Frankfurt's covered market has fed the city since 1954, and the tradition goes back further than that. This is not a tourist market — the vendors are the same families who've held their stalls for decades. We stop to taste a traditional bite or two: this is what Frankfurt actually eats when nobody's watching.
Stop 4
Most people fly into Frankfurt, glance at the skyline, and think they understand the city. They don't - and for years, neither did I, until I started building Frankenbridge International here in Neu-Isenburg. Since then I've worked closely with vetted local historians and guides to uncover the Frankfurt that doesn't make it onto the postcard: the Kaisersaal's 52 emperors, the Kleinmarkthalle that fed the city through two wars, the Iron Bridge where old faith meets new finance. I don't just point at buildings - I connect you with people who know why they matter.
Stop 5
(Iron Bridge) Eiserner Steg— 10 minutes One of the most interesting places to stand in Frankfurt. Look one way at the Dom, Frankfurt's medieval cathedral; look the other at the Bankenviertel, one of the world's most powerful financial districts. Old faith and new money, facing each other across the River Main — and your guide explains why this view says more about Frankfurt than any other and where you can take the city in your hand back home with both spectacular views modern and old of the Frankfurt city where the European Central Bank greets you upon arrival. Feel the vibe of Frankfurt like we feel it!
Stop 6
Dom-Römer Quarter (New Old Town) — 15 minutes A neighborhood that looks 500 years old but was completed in 2018, rebuilt on the exact footprints of the medieval buildings the war destroyed. It's beautiful, it's strange, and it raises real questions about memory, reconstruction, and what a city owes its past. You'll leave with your own opinion.
