A 2-hour private tour of Bratislava, where you will explore key Jewish sites, starting at the historic Heydukova Street Synagogue. This neo-Romanesque treasure, built in 1926, stands as a reminder of the once-thriving Jewish community here. As you walk through the city, you’ll visit the haunting Jewish Holocaust Memorial on Panská Street, which serves as a stark reminder of the lives lost during World War II.
Stop 3
Next, we’ll take you to Rybné námestie, a square that was once home to Bratislava’s oldest synagogue before its demolition in the 1960s. Your guide will share stories of the city’s Jewish population, from their mediaeval roots to their persecution during the Holocaust. Each stop on this tour reflects the cultural richness and heartbreaking history of Bratislava’s Jewish community. As you explore, you will hear about key figures like Rabbi Moses Sofer, a leader whose teachings are still influential today, and learn how the Jewish community rebuilt itself after the atrocities of World War II. From the architecture of the synagogue to the emotional silence at the Holocaust Memorial, this tour offers a deeply moving experience.
Stop 4
The tour ends at the Chatam Sofer Memorial, a cemetery that houses the grave of the famed rabbi, Chatam Sofer, and stands as one of the most important Jewish heritage sites in Europe. During this tour, you will gain a deeper understanding of the profound impact Jewish people had on Bratislava’s cultural and religious life. Feel the weight of history as you stand at sites that witnessed both the flourishing and devastation of Jewish life in the city. Your guide will not only reveal the well-known aspects of Bratislava’s Jewish history but also uncover lesser-known stories of heroism and tragedy, like the heroic efforts of locals who helped rescue Jewish people during the Holocaust.
