The Civilian Control Zone (CCZ) is a buffer area just south of the DMZ. While it is not part of the actual DMZ, it is still tightly controlled by the South Korean military. Entry into the CCZ is controlled because: It is very close to North Korea There are still military facilities and surveillance systems The area contains landmines and sensitive infrastructure Visitors must: Join an authorized tour Pass through military checkpoints Show a passport or ID
