 
The
$125 million that Sun International dumped into this massive resort not
only caused a sensation among the traveling public, but it revitalized
the destination of the Bahamas almost single-handedly. The enormous
expenditure resulted in a hotel that's really more of a giant theme
park.
The Atlantis boasts what it calls the
largest aquarium in the world, and believe us, it's big -- 14 acres in
all, with four lagoons, waterfalls, fish of every stripe, even sharks
and manta rays. There are more than 150 species on display; it's enough
to leave jaded travel writers slack jawed and thoroughly awed.
The grounds are an astounding sight, and
guests hardly need the beach: guests can get aquatic in two free-form
pools, splash along a lazy river ride, or slip down a waterslide.
Grownups here have plenty to do, with a slew of water sports, access to
golf, tennis and of course, the beach.
Dining, of course, is a massive affair,
too -- 38 restaurants, bars and lounges can be found on site, several of
which are among the best in the Bahamas. After dining, guests can head
for the massive casino (largest in the Caribbean) or take in a revue at
the Atlantis Showroom.

looking for quiet, understated elegance, this isn't the place -- the
decorators here apparently believe that more is better -- but if you
want a place where there's never a dull moment, the Atlantis is the peak
experience in the Bahamas.
